Black Dagger Brotherhood trainee Boone is conflicted about his father's death; that the two were never close is an understatement. Meanwhile, at Pyre's Revyval, a bacchanalian club in downtown Caldwell, Syn lets his inner demons have their way via some anonymous basement sex. When his partner turns up dead (eviscerated with a meat hook!), he realizes he doesn't remember much of the night. Helaine also frequents Pyre's Revyval, but only because she is looking for her sister's killer. The possibility of a serial killer on the loose means Butch O'Neal gets to polish the skills he used in the Caldwell PD before he joined the Brotherhood. Boone joins him, needing to do something, and when Boone encounters Helaine, he realizes he wants her. Ward is known for stuffing as many story lines as possible into her BDB books, so to follow just one romance makes the book feel almost like a stand-alone. (Almost.) The procedural element of the investigation is a nice touch, and, even if readers guess the identity of the killer, Ward throws in enough other twists and angsty turns that Blood Truth is never boring.
