Cabot Cove takes another step toward becoming the murder capital of the world. Jessica Fletcher is back in her lovely Maine coastal town after solving a murder in South Carolina. Geographically speaking, she has become something of an equal opportunity sleuth, and when lothario Nelson Penzell, a newcomer to her hometown, is found battered to death in the art shop he'd bought a partnership in, she wastes no time setting out to prove that meek young manicurist Coreen Wilson is innocent despite having been found hysterical and covered in blood in front of the shop. With the help of Doc Hazlitt, Jessica prevents Sheriff Mort Metzger from questioning Coreen until Jessica can find her a lawyer. In the meantime, Jessica, with the aid of many of the Cabot Cove regulars, digs into the mystery herself. When her old acquaintance Michael Haggerty of MI6, caught trying to break into Penzell's house, explains that he's looking into an international smuggling ring, Jessica has to acknowledge that the case may be more complicated than she thought. Michael's later admission that there may be more than simple jewel smuggling involved and that he's after the kingpin Penzell was working for makes Jessica wonder whether Penzell was murdered by a castoff lover, a jealous husband, his unhappy business partner, or a deadly spymaster. Naturally, she won't give up until the truth is revealed. Despite her long record of triumphs, the queen of cozy always finds an interesting new twist. A visit to an old college pal takes a dark (but not too dark) turn when a renowned mystery author discovers a death that screams murder, at least to her. Delighted to be reunited with her old friend from Harrison College, Jessica Fletcher's curious about Willis, the man Dolores Nickens has just wed. After two failed marriages, Dolores may finally have found the soul mate she'll settle down with forever, and Jessica's cautiously pleased to make his acquaintance on a trip to Manning Hall, his impressive South Carolina home. But Willis raises Jessica's hackles: Though he's obviously warm to Dolores, he's the kind of guy who can turn his charm on and off. When he tries to fire members of his staff before a dinner party, Dolores must talk sense into him by pointing out that fired people can't serve guests. The one person Willis can never be upset with is his 9-year-old granddaughter, Abby, the apple of his eye, and of his bride's too, though she's grandmother by marriage rather than blood. His doting on Abby seems inversely proportional to his loathing of his son-in-law, Clancy, whose irresponsible lifestyle irks Willis to no end. But none of these domestic tensions mar Jessica's visit until Willis is found dead near the estate's koi pond. Jessica is instantly convinced that Willis has been murdered and equally convinced that her job as famed mystery author J.B. Fletcher will give her the insight to solve the case-if only she can convince the reluctant local sheriff of the same. A quintessential cozy that breaks no new ground and doesn't need to. Even on vacation, Jessica Fletcher can't escape murder. Having just sent her latest manuscript to her editor with three hours to spare, Jessica is free to join her beloved nephew, Grady, his wife, Donna, and their son, Frank, in a Rockaway Beach vacation cottage. In connection with her unexpected promotion at Courtland Finance and Investments, Donna has been rewarded with a month at one of the cottages owned by the Courtland family. When Jessica meets the family—including the matriarch, Matilda, whose oldest son, Jason, is the CEO—she can't help noticing undercurrents among its competitive members. Jessica and young Frank's great time at the beach and the Courtland-sponsored art classes ends when Donna finds Jason's dead body on the tennis court, still being bombarded by high-speed tennis balls. Jessica is convinced that Jason's death was no accident, but detectives Vincent Tieri and Aisha Kelly, who clearly aren't familiar with her resume, aren't impressed with her thoughts or actions. Only when Tieri talks to his old friend Mort Metzger, the sheriff of Cabot Cove, Maine, does he start taking Jessica seriously. Although Jessica continues to spend time with Frank and enjoy the beach community, she also takes advantage of her opportunities to dig up the dirt on the Courtland family and their business, which may be in more trouble than they let on. A unique murder method and welcome local color make this one of Jessica's best adventures. Copyright Kirkus 2022 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved.

It's true: Jessica Fletcher can't go anywhere without finding a dead body. Jessica's friend and fellow author Lorna Winters has broken her leg and can't go to Northern Ireland to pick up the American Author Guest of Honor Award, which also involves several interviews and panels, so Jessica has agreed to fill in for her. When her Cabot Cove neighbor Maeve O'Bannon asks Jessica to deliver some paintings made by her grandfather to her relatives in the village of Bushmills, near Belfast, and offers to arrange her stay in a lovely hotel, Jessica agrees even though Maeve's relatives, who are involved in the family beauty product business, don't always get along. After a lovely time at the book festival in Belfast, where she meets Maeve's cousin Dr. Michael O'Bannon, the company's figurehead, she's picked up by Owen Mullen, another family member, and driven to the River Bush Hotel. Dougal Nolan is the charming host whose daughter, Maggie, is Owen's intended. During a dinner at Jane Mullen's mansion, tensions among the relatives threaten to boil over even in front of two Frenchmen who are visiting to discuss a merger. The next morning, Jessica sets off on a bike ride and finds Michael O'Bannon dead in his car. Of course, she can't resist investigating. With help from an eager Maggie, she delves into several possible motives for murder, some of them very close to home. The delightful descriptions of the history and beauties of the Irish island seriously overshadow the mystery. Copyright Kirkus 2022 Kirkus/BPI Communications. All rights reserved.

Cabot Cove, whose population must be decimated by now, is rocked by yet another murder. Though she seems to attract as many murders as she solves, famous author Jessica Fletcher is beloved of her friends and neighbors. As she eats breakfast at the local luncheonette with one of them, Dr. Seth Hazlitt, they're accosted by Evelyn Phillips, former editor of the local newspaper, who's upset about the condition of Bertha Mae Cormier, an elderly woman apparently entranced by a much younger man. Concerned, Jessica looks into Bertha Mae's relationship with her next-door neighbor, Martin Terranova, owner of a health-conscious exercise and meditation studio whose classes are popular with both men and women. Well-liked junk collector Oscar Cisneros is arrested after he's found with one of Bertha Mae's antiques, which Terranova accuses him of stealing, but Jessica and Sheriff Mort Metzger are far from convinced of his guilt. When Terranova is found crushed by a barbell, Jessica takes time from researching her next book to investigate this new murder. Working with the editor of the Gazette, who's also quietly looking into a hot story of embezzlement that will shock the residents of Cabot Cove, Jessica does a deep dive into Terranova's background and finds that he had a shady past with other well-off elderly women. But is that the only possible motive for his murder? The redoubtable sleuth once again unravels several complex cases plaguing her beloved hometown. Copyright Kirkus 2023 Kirkus/BPI Communications. In Fletcher and Moran's routine latest Murder, She Wrote mystery (after Death on the Emerald Isle), writer and sleuth Jessica Fletcher is at work on a new novel when former Cabot Cove Gazette editor Evelyn Phillips returns to the small Maine town to check in on her and Jessica's mutual friend, Bertha Mae Cormier. After Evelyn and Jessica visit Bertha Mae, they become less concerned with the addled letters she's been sending to Evelyn and more concerned that her young, handsome next-door neighbor, Martin Terranova, is taking advantage of her. Bertha Mae is clearly smitten with the decades-younger fitness junkie, and her friends come to suspect he's a serial predator intent on manipulating older people into granting him access to her finances. When Martin is found murdered, Evelyn's public distrust of him makes her the prime suspect. Jessica, however, believes one of Martin's other elderly victims has taken him down, and sets out to clear her friend's name. Fans will know exactly what they're getting into, but newbies may balk at the surplus of overdescribed tea times and the stilted dialogue. It's a forgettable installment in a venerable series.
